Broken Daisy Placemats

Foundation paper piecing and a bit of gentle curve combine to ensure that the points on these beautiful placemats are perfect every time. I’ll share some options for making the “centers” of the daisies.

Note: You should have experience with foundation paper piecing before taking this class; we will briefly review some basics, but this is NOT a beginning paper piecing class.


Fabric Requirements: 


Other materials and supplies:

  • Broken Daisy Placemats kit (foundation papers and instructions) from Quiltworx
  • Rotary cutter
  • Rotary ruler (6 x 24 is OK, but as you will be doing the cutting on larger pieces before class, 6x12 –ish is better.)
  • Rotary mat—You will be using this to trim as you go, so you won’t need a large mat:  18 x 24 would be fine.  Bring a smaller mat, too, IF YOU HAVE ONE.  I use a small mat to do the seam trimming on the paper piecing.
  • Scissors for cutting paper
  • Thread to match or blend with your fabrics
  • Sewing machine in good working order, with foot or other method to sew accurate ¼” , and metal (preferably) foot that allows you to see the center in order to sew on a line.
  • Standard sewing notions: pins, spare machine needles, etc.

It will be easier for you if you do some of the cutting ahead of time.  We will be cutting out pieces during class, but you can get the cutting ready for that step. If you are uncertain about any of this cutting, you can do it in class.

1)  Don’t let the dense look of the pattern scare you;   it will be easier when you see it demonstrated in person. J

2)  Roughly cut apart the 8 Unit A Foundaton papers (NP 428),  cutting with about an 1/8” or ¼” margin around the outside of the dark, solid line outlining the pieces.  Each piece will then be the size of half a placement. These will be the foundations for your piecing.

We will order out for lunch ( from Pizza Counter, Pizza Hut, or Jimmy John’s, according to participants’ wishes) but you may bring your own lunch, if you like.  The shop has a refrigerator, microwave, and toaster oven.
