Emerald City Class

Emerald City
24” Square (or 84” x 84”)
Saturday, June 15, 2019    10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
$25;  Ruler, book,  and materials separate
Instructor: Karen Burns

This beautiful scrap design is from scrap quilt diva Bonnie Hunter, and would be equally gorgeous in any color.   Join us to make a table topper (or quilt) that looks more difficult than it really is. As Bonnie says, “There are many, many pieces…but te extra piecing is worth it!”

Fabric:

The class will focus on a single 24” block, but you can make as many blocks as you wish.  Nine blocks will make an 84” square quilt.

As this is a scrap quilt it’s impossible to give amounts, but for a single block you’ll want:

Green--a yard’s worth or so of assorted scraps and strings; you’ll need some that are at least 2-1/2” wide for the half-square triangles.  For more variety in the block, bring more fabrics.
Neutral-- a yard’s worth or so of assorted scraps and strings; you’ll need some that are at least 2-1/2” wide for the half-square triangles. For more variety in the block, bring more fabrics.

Other materials and supplies:

  • “String Frenzy,” by Bonnie Hunter  (The book has many beautiful quilts—you’ll want to make more than one of them!)

  • Foundation paper—don’t worry, this  is just a stabilizer for string quilting, not paper piecing.  I use paper from Carol Doak specifically for this purpose because It’s easier to remove the paper, but you can also use regular printer paper.  Some people use pages from phone books but if you do the phone book should be old enough that the ink won’t rub off on the fabric. For each block you will need (10) 5-1/2” square and (4) 5” squares.

  • Rotary cutter, ruler,  and mat

  • Thread to match or blend with your fabrics

  • Sewing machine in good working order, with foot or other method to sew accurate ¼”

  • Standard sewing notions:  pins, spare machine needles, etc

Lunch:  We will order out for lunch  ( from Pizza Counter, Pizza Hut, or Jimmy John’s, according to participants’ wishes) but you may bring your own lunch, if you like.  The shop has a refrigerator, microwave, and toaster oven.
